Discover 125 launched Is Bajaj confusing people

A new Discover 125 joins the Discover 100 & 150.. is Bajaj confusing people with too many variants?

On March 31st (read this), Bajaj has launched a new Discover model in a 125 cc Avatar. Priced at Rs. 45,500 (Ex-showroom Delhi) this model now stretches the Discover brand across 100, 125 and 150 cc variants.

With the Discover 125, Bajaj now has the entire spectrum of the basic commuter motorcycles in india covered. Interestingly the Discover 100, 125 and 150 are currently priced very attractively at Rs. 43,000, Rs, 45,500 and Rs. 49,000 (Ex-showroom Delhi) respectively.

For the common man, the Discover 125 will be difficult to differentiate from the 100 and 150 as the Discover 125 virtually carries forward the same looks.

Is Bajaj confusing people..??

"Why is Bajaj confusing people with so many models? Wasnt the Discover a 125 cc, a 112 cc and 135 cc once?"

My brother (who used to be a bike enthusiast a few years back) said the above to me this morning, when he heard about the new Discover 125.

Discover and Pulsar..

isnt that just the two names that Mr. Rajiv Bajaj wants us to remember?

To answer him, I just asked a few questions: "Can you name the models from Bajajs current lineup"?

He replied, "The Pulsar series.. the Discover models.. and.. err.. the Platina". He had forgot to mention the Avenger, which I reminded him.

I then asked him, "Can you name the current models from Yamaha"?

He replied, "R15.. Fazer, FZ.. and hmmm...". I told him that he missed the SS125 (which is basically the rebranded Gladiator to which he had no clue), SZ/SZ-X/SZ-R, YBR 125, YBR 110 and Crux.

I went further and asked him, "Can you name the current models from TVS"?

He said, "I do not have an idea about the current commuter models, but I know the Apache RTR". I told him that the other motorcycle models from TVS are the Flame, Jive, Star City and Sport.

Knowing very well by now as to where the conversation was headed, my brother told me that he knew that the Hero Honda lineup was cluttered with too many models and also that he wont be able to recall all the models from Hondas (HMSI) stable either.

By now my brother realized with a smile what I was trying to convey.

Its actually a baggage of the past which Bajaj carries (in the minds of a few old timers)

In the past, Bajaj did put many models/brands on the road. For. eg. 4S Champion, Caliber, Caliber Croma, Caliber 115, Aspire, Boxer AR, Boxer AT, Boxer CT, CT 100, Plaitna, XCD 125, XCD 135. Most of which were eventually discontinued.

In the case of my brother it just happens that he belongs to a generation which had passionately followed the 2 wheeler scene of India a couple of years back, therefore he still carries the historical baggage of Bajaj back in his mind. Currently his interest in two wheelers is like just another normal guy/customer.

In the end, Discover and Pulsar, isnt that just the two names that Mr. Rajiv Bajaj wants us to remember? And if one can recall those two names, is there really any confusion?

Did you know:

[1] The Maruti Alto (Indias current largest selling 4 wheeler) was first launched in India with two engine options of a 800 cc (sourced from the Maruti 800), 3 cylinder engine and a 1,100 cc (sourced from the Wagon R), 4 cylinder engine

[2] The 1,100 cc engine was later discontinued

[3] Recently a new variant with a 1,000 cc, 3 cylinder engine was introduced as the Alto K-10 (currently even the Wagon R comes with the same engine)

Confusing.. would you say?

As a common guy I have got a lot many things in my mind than keep myself updated with the historical updates/changes on car models. To me the Maruti Alto is the same old, reliable brand that I have known for years.. regardless of whether it was 1,100 cc or currently has an 800 cc or 1,000 cc engine.

Pulsar is now the Official Sponsor of Ghost Ryderz Stunt Team !!

Ghost Ryderz becomes the first professional motorcycle Stunt Riding Team from India to be officially sponsored by a motorcycle brand..!!

"Pulsar, India’s No.1 Sports Bike is the official sponsor of Ghost Ryderz, India’s No. 1 Motorcycle Freestyle Stunt riding team".

That’s what the landing page of the Ghost Ryderz site says. Ghost Ryderz has indeed become India’s first professional motorcycle stunt team to be sponsored by a corporate entity. The team has recently revealed a new set of Pulsar 220S bikes which has been custom modified into genuine street fighters along with a customized paint theme as well.

Ghost Ryderz on Pulsars

Who are Ghost Ryderz?

They are a team of 5 talented young guys from Kerala who call themselves as "Damboy", "Smokey", "Phenom", "Nio" and "Dauntless". They first shot into national limelight in 2009 when they were picked up to tour with MTV for the 2009 Pulsar MTV Stuntmania auditions (to perform stunts in front of the crowd at various cities across India). They were once again chosen to tour with MTV for the second season of the MTV Pulsar Stuntmania "Rockathon" Auditions in 2010.

Ghost Ryderz now regularly perform Stunt shows in various cities of India. To get a glimpse of the Ghost Ryderz doing their stuff, check out their Facebook Page.

Pulsar and Motorcycle Stunting

Pulsar is the first motorcycle brand in India to associate itself with Stunting. Bikers in India have now started to strongly associate stunting with the Pulsar brand. And it is for good reason.

The 2003 "Pulsar DTS-i" TV Commercial (Wheelie and Stoppie on the bridge) is still very fresh in my mind, and how can one not mention the 2008 "Pulsar Mania" TV Commercial which featured jaw dropping synchronized stunts. Pulsar has also sponsored India’s first Stunt Reality TV Show "StuntMania" on MTV in 2009 and 2010.

Ghost Ryderz Official Stunt Bikes

The association of Pulsar and Ghost Ryderz, which is the first of its kind in India, is great news for the budding sport of Freestyle Motorcycle Stunting. I seriously hope that this association with Pulsar would provide Ghost Ryderz the boost to make us proud even on the international freestyle stunt circuit.

Go Ghost Ryderz..!! Go Pulsar..!!

KTM RC25 IS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH IN INDIA BY 2014

KTM,one of the famous Austrian motorcycle company, has recently acquired the brand Husqvarna from BMW Motorrad. It is now planning to launch their second bike Duke 390 in the next few months in India. KTM reported its best ever annual sales in 2012 with a total sale of more than107,000 units. The combination of KTM and Bajaj is getting better with the success of KTM Duke 200 which has already sold more than 8500 units. The next big launch after Duke 390 that KTM is planning is a toned-down version of superbike RC8. It is a 250cc racing replica of the RC8. KTM is also working on the tourer version of Duke 390. Bajaj is importing a few units of the RC8, only for displaying the bike at selected KTM outlets.

KTM RC8

The market of 200cc and above bikes are on peak these days and these bikes are performing well which is evident from the success of Duke 200. This section is mainly ruled by the Japanese bike makers and there are few other bikes like Honda CBR250R and Kawasaki Ninja 250R which has also shown outstanding performance.

KTM RC8

The current bike might be christened as KTM RC25 which will be manufactured at Chakan and will be sold in markets across the world. We are expecting KTM RC25 to feature a single cylinder 250cc engine, which is expected to churn a power output of around 30bhp and a torque output of about 25 Nm. If the bike satisfies our expectation, then it has to be the most powerful 250cc motorcycle in the country. KTM RC25 is expected at a price below the Duke 390. Bajaj-KTM combination is known for its competitive prices and so the price will be the biggest factor against the likes of Kawasaki Ninja, the Hyosung GT250R and the HondaCBR250R motorcycles.
