2012 MOTO GP CHAMPION MAX BIAGGI ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

The year 2012 is on an end and it also brought the end of some racing legends, first Michael Schumacher announced his retirement from F1 racing and now four time world champion Max Biaggi has announced his retirement from motorcycle racing. The 41-year-old Italian, who also won the World Superbike Championship twice and was champion for 2012 Moto GP as well, made the announcement at a press conference organised at Romes Vallelunga circuit, where he began his career. The racer was participating for Aprilias Eugene Laverty.

Biaggi said: "Ive chosen to quit and, unlike others, its not because of physical issues or because I havent found a competitive bike. Ive turned down a contract with Aprilia that was identical to the one I had this year, with the same bike, for the same money. "I believe Ive missed enough time with my children and my partner already, and I think its right that I dedicate myself to them because time flies and I cant stop that. Im not some old politician, attached to my chair; its only fair that I make way for the youngsters."

On Wednesday morning Biaggi pre-empted his media briefing by tweeting: "It is a new dawn for me today, nothing will be like it was before. Onwards and upwards, though!" Known as The Roman Emperor, Biaggi rode his first grand prix season at the age of 20 in 1992 and went on to win 29 races and four straight titles in the quarter-litre category with Aprilia and Honda.

Biaggis rivalry with his countryman Valentino Rossi raised the popularity of the premier 500cc category from 1998, as the two Italians beckoned in the MotoGP era. Biaggi, forced to sit out the whole 2006 season as Dani Pedrosa took his position, and soon switched to the World Superbike Championship and won on his debut in Qatar, for Alstare Suzuki. Biaggi returned to Aprilia to claim a single win in 2009, before taking his first World Superbike title in 2010 and wrestling the crown back from Carlos Checa at Magny-Cours last month. The search is now on for a new team-mate for Aprilias Eugene Laverty, with the 2013 season starting at Phillip Island in February.

BATTERY INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

Battery Inspection and Replacement:
You should be very careful when working with batteries. Always wear safety glasses. Battery acid can cause severe burns if it contacts your skin, and will damage clothing. If you accidentally spill any battery acid, the spill should be cleaned up immediately. Use a water and baking soda solution to clean the spill area. This combination helps neutralize the acid.

Battery Inspection and Replacement

Battery Inspection and Replacement

Battery Inspection and Replacement

Inspection and Cleaning:
If the motorcycle or ATV has a battery, the battery should be inspected for cracks in the casing, broken terminals, or other signs of damage. This includes checking for sulfation or warping on the internal plates. If any of these conditions are found, the battery should be replaced. You should also ensure that the battery cable connectors make good contact with the battery terminals. If the cable connectors or terminals are corroded or loose, clean and tighten the connections. Battery cables are cleaned with a wire brush. An application of dielectric grease on the cable connectors and battery terminals helps to prevent future corrosion.

Electrolyte Testing:
The electrical condition of a battery is determined by measuring the specific gravity of the battery’s electrolyte. The specific gravity is measured with a hydrometer. The electrolyte should have a specific gravity of 1.280 to 1.320 (depending on the air temperature). As the battery becomes discharged, this reading decreases.

Refilling:
Remember that batteries are filled with an acid and distilled water electrolyte solution. The acid in the battery won’t evaporate, but the water does. When refilling batteries, add only distilled water. Distilled water should be used to prevent minerals and other impurities from contaminating the sulfuric acid and the lead plates in the battery.

Maintenance-Free Batteries:
Many motorcycles and ATVs have maintenance-free batteries. This type of battery doesn’t require fluid level checks because the battery is completely sealed. Most maintenance-free batteries are equipped with some type of other indicator that’s used to check the charged/discharged condition of the battery. If this type of battery fails to hold a charge, it’s probably defective. Before replacing a maintenance-free battery, the charging and regulating circuits should be thoroughly tested.

What are the 2014 Kawasaki Z1000SX Improvements

Kawasaki have just released the details of several new models for 2014, the first being the Kawasaki Z1000SX.

Since introducing the Z1000SX to the Kawasaki Range in 2011, it has gained a huge following and has been the UK’s No1 selling Kawasaki each year since.   Given this success, how do you improve it, well Kawasaki have added a raft of changes so the NEW 2014 Z1000SX is no facelift update but in fact a full overhaul.

Here’s a list of the improvements……take a deep breath………..

  • Greater Power and Torque giving even sharper response in the important mid-range whilst building on the already impressive top end rush.

  • Tokico radial-mount monobloc calipers (first time ever on a Kawasaki) offer enhanced feel and controllability with firmer initial touch.

  • A new ABS unit allows more precise control of brake fluid pressure, and the addition of a fluid pressure sensor enables the ABS unit to help suppress rear lift under braking.

  • Enhanced intake note adds to riding exhilaration.

  • More direct response to rider input delivers quicker handling for added riding excitement.

  • Perfectly integrated accessory panniers can each hold a full-face helmet and fit so neatly they give the bike an overall width reduction of 70mm.

  • Remote rear preload adjuster – for simple changes to suit pillion or laden pannier riding.

  • Taller 6th gear ratio for improved long distance comfort.

  • Seat construction aiding all day rider and pillion comfort.

  • Mirror housings giving improved rear visibility – also wider overall.

  • Kawasaki’s latest traction control: 3-mode KTRC – as fitted to the flagship Kawasaki ZZR1400.

  • Power Mode selection: Full and Low Power.

  • Improved Instrumentation - New functions include KTRC, Power Mode, Economical Riding Indicator, remaining range, current and average fuel consumption, and coolant temperature.

The first new Z1000SXs are expected to be with Kawasaki dealers in October with prices to be confirmed nearer the time for the standard, ABS and Touring versions.

Hondas Revealed 2010

American Honda has announced two new 2010 models including a sport-tourer and a fuel-injected middleweight cruiser.
Also announced were updates to Honda’s CBR1000RR and CBR600RR sportbikes. The four bikes join the previously announced Fury chopper, SH150i and Elite scooters, Gold Wing tourer and CRF off-road models in Honda’s 2010 lineup.
“We are very excited about announcing these four street bikes for 2010,” said Bill Savino, Honda powersports press manager. “Within this mix we have a new cruiser, a new lightweight touring bike and two CBR sport bikes. The cruiser offers a whole new look for Honda, our new touring bike delivers light weight, nimble handling, a stylish fairing plus saddlebags for the long haul or daily commute. The CBRs continue to set the standards of performance for the full-on sporting genre. This sets the stage for a great year in 2010 and there will be additional street model announcements later this fall.”

2010 Honda NT700V

The 2010 Honda NT700V sport-tourer was previously known in Europe as the Honda Deauville. Billed as the “only true lightweight touring bike on the market”, the NT700V comes outfitted with interlinked saddlebags, a five-position windscreen and Honda’s combined braking system with ABS as an available option.
The NT700V is powered by a DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder 680cc (81 x 66mm) liquid-cooled, 52-degree, V-Twin, with Honda’s programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) system.

Power from the Twin is transmitted through a five-speed gearbox to a shaft final drive. This is largely the same mill as in the DN-01 introduced to the U.S. earlier this year.
As used in the Deauville the middleweight Twin claims 65 hp at 8,000 rpm with 49 ft-lbs at 6,500 rpm. With the 5.2-gallon fuel tank filled, the standard NT700V claims a 562 lbs ready-to-ride curb weight. The Euro-model non-ABS Deauville’s claimed dry weight tips the scales at 520 lbs, so we expect no significant difference in fully fueled weights between the Deauville and NT700V.
The single-shock rear suspension features a remote adjuster for preload tweaking while a 41mm telescopic fork provides suspension up front.
We’re eager to ride this new tourer, as it seems to strike a nice balance between Honda’s venerable, long-standing VFR800 and ST1300. Available in metallic red or metallic silver, the 2010 NT700V retails for $9,999. The ABS version is only available in Metallic Silver with an MSRP of $10,999.
2010 Honda Shadow Phantom

The 2010 Honda Shadow Phantom joins Honda’s cruiser line, using the same liquid-cooled 745cc engine as the Shadow Aero and Shadow Spirit. Unlike the older Shadow models, the Phantom receives PGM-FI.
The 41mm front fork has large-diameter shrouds in a matte finish, and large billet aluminum triple-clamp. At the rear, the dual-shock suspension system has five preload settings.
With the introduction of the 2010 Shadow Phantom Honda finally catches on to the now-trendy bobber movement. The Phantom is only available in black with various blacked-out components enhancing the bad-boy bobber image. It appears to use the Shadow Spirit rear fender and the Shadow Aero’s chubbier 120/90 x 17 front wheel/tire to help complete the look. The Phantom will appear in dealerships in November with a ticket price of $7,999.
2010 Honda CBR1000RR / CBR600RR
The CBR1000RR receives a slightly larger flywheel for 2010; a change Honda says provides a smoother power delivery. Track day enthusiasts should appreciate the redesigned license plate which should be easier to remove than on previous models. Appearance-wise, the CBR1000RR gets a new muffler cover and two new color schemes, pearl orange/light metallic silver and red /black. The C-ABS version will be available only in black.

The CBR600RR also gets two new colors, pearl orange/Black and “Leyla”, a special black on white graphic design. The C-ABS version will only be available in red/black.
Honda hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the 2010 CBR1000RR or CBR600RR.

Kawasaki Early Release Models 2013

Kawasaki has just released news about changes to four of its existing models for 2013, including the addition of an electronic steering damper to the potent ZX-10R and the option of adding antilock brakes to the versatile Ninja 650. As for new bikes in the pipeline, we expect a couple of announcements in September.
ZX-10R
Kawasaki’s superbike has been the leader among Asian literbikes since its ground-up revamp in 2011, and it came out on top in our 2012 Japanese Superbike Shootout based on its class-leading horsepower, lightest weight and bleeding edge technology.
Steering dampers aren’t often a prime topic when discussing liter-sized sportbikes, but Kawasaki hasn’t excelled with the stabilizers employed on the 10R. Recent 1000cc Ninjas  have been equipped with Ohlins steering dampers, but they’ve always been light on control and adjustability despite Ohlins’ estimable reputation; they build ‘em to Kawasaki’s specifications.
Meanwhile, Japanese rivals have fitted electronically controlled units that vary damping force according to speed, and their variable nature boasts soft damping at low speeds for maximum agility while maintaining stiff settings when needed at high speeds for optimum stability.

So, the addition of an Ohlins electronic steering damper to the ZX will likely bring the Kawi up to par with its competition in that regard. Using Ohlins patented twin-tube design, a dedicated ECU mounted under the fuel tank cover varies damping based not only on rear-wheel speed, but also the rate of acceleration and deceleration.
Otherwise, the only thing new about the 10R is the addition of a Pearl Flat White color option alongside the traditional Lime Green hue associated with Kawasaki’s sportbikes. MSRPs of both the standard model and the ABS version are up $300, to $14,299 and $15,299, respectively. The 2013 ZX-10 is expected to hit dealers in September.
Ninja 650
We’ve been fans of the sporty and affordable Ninja 650 since it debuted in 2006. It’s a versatile machine that can please both noobs and vets, and it became more appealing with various tweaks and sharper styling of the upgraded 2012 version.
To expand the Ninja’s appeal among safety-conscious riders, Kawi has added an ABS version to the 2013 lineup for an extra $500. The base model retails for $7599, up a Benjamin over last year’s bike, while the ABS version lists at $8099. It’s available in three color choices: a new Pearl Stardust White, a Candy Thunder Blue, or a Vader-esque Metallic Flat Spark Black. You can expect to see the 2013 Ninja 650 in dealers later this month.
2013 Kawasaki Ninja 650 blueThe amiable Ninja 650 can now be had with antilock brakes. Also new is this blue color option, as seen on the 2012 ZX-14R.

KLR650
If you’re in the market for a globe-trotting adventure bike that won’t break the bank, the venerable KLR650 soldiers on mechanically unchanged for 2013 since its considerable update in 2007. And if its stock configuration doesn’t quite fit your needs, there is an almost unlimited amount of aftermarket support for this two-wheeled Jeep, as we found in our nine-part KLR650 project bike series. The KLR650 is expected to hit showroom floors later this month.
2013 Kawasaki KLR650The revered KLR650 receives nothing new for 2013 except for the BNG (bold new graphics) treatment.

KLX250S
Like its KLR big bro, the quarter-liter KLX250S receives only BNG additions to its 298-pound dual-sport package for 2013. Winner of our 2008 Lightweight Dual-Purpose Shootout, its retail price goes up $100 to $5099. This is quite a bargain compared to the higher-spec Yamaha WR250R’s MSRP of $6690 or even the low-tech XT250’s $5190, but it’s $600 more than the newly announced Honda CRF250L that will be launched this summer. Shootout, anyone…? Like the KLR650 and Ninja 650, the 2013 KLX250S is expected to hit dealer in late July.
2013 Kawasaki KLX250S whiteLike the rest of these early-release Kawasaki models, the KLX250S is now offered in a white version.

1997 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Standard

Remember the FLHS?
Harley-Davidson never really discontinued the Electra-Glide Sport, they merely created two models from one. First came the Road King, a stunning model resplendant in chrome and classic styling touches. Now weve got our hands on the second spawn from the Sports demise, Harleys FLHT, or Electra Glide Standard.
The FLHT is less expensive than its Road King cousin, for it lacks that models extra chrome and optional fuel injection. But if youre worried that your Electra Glide might come up short when compared to The King, fear not - for this bike is much more than just an Elvis impersonator.
Differences start at the front where our Standard wears a wide touring fairing in place of the Sports smaller windscreen. Instruments have moved from the original tank-mounted location and are now fairing-mounted. Our only complaint with the layout was a gaping hole left in the dash where a stereo should be. We dont have a problem with Harley lowering its price by not fitting a stereo, but surely they could place a little plastic door over the area so owners might get some extra storage space for small items.
Besides the stereo, other cost-cutting areas include chrome. While some FLHs have chrome engine covers and saddlebag trim, an Electra Glide does without and instead relies on the appeal of its basic black paint and real steel.
But while you dont get fancy chrome or a stereo, you do get that wonderful 80 cubic inch lump of Milwaukee iron. Im sure lab tests would show that rumblings from a Big Twin send alpha waves directly to your brain and cause the release of endorphins.
Normally we lean heavily towards bikes that lean heavily, but when we rode the Electra Glide, we always found ourselves taking the long way home or getting up just a little earlier on Sunday to go for some wandering day trip. This bike has a way of doing that to you.

Contributing to that relaxed feel is a frame that has been redesigned for all 97 FLHs. Seat height has been lowered to just 28 inches, nearly a full inch lower than previous models. That lower, and heavier braced, frame enabled Harley designers to create a seat that was narrower at its front, meaning your legs dont have to splay as wide to reach the ground. Other advantages of the new frame include a repositioned fuse console and larger battery. Previously there was little room under the seat, so fuses were stored in the fairing. Now theyve found a home under the left panel, where they can be accessed without tools. Increased under-seat room has also meant an increase in battery size, with amp-hours jumping 50% from 20 to 30. A final bonus is that just 11 fasteners are now used to hold the luggage and rear fender assembly together, as opposed to the older designs complex array of nuts and bolts.
One cost-cutting measure that we dont care for is the lack of fuel injection. Harley impressed us with their injected Road King and Electra Glide Ultra Classic and their easy starting and clean response. The only downside was that FI chips werent programmable for riders who wanted to make modifications, something that has been changed this year. Wed like to see fuel injection offered as an option.
Fuel injection or not, our Electra Glide started easily and soon settled into that familiar its-gonna-stall idle. Vibration is almost non-existent thanks to the rubber-mounted engine and floorboards. Power is just what youd expect - piles of torque and bottom-end grunt. Hell, you can leave traffic lights in fifth gear if you want. That same stump-pulling torque makes for easy cruising around town and on the highways. Theres power everywhere, so shifting is an option rather than a necessity. Just roll on the throttle and let the engine do the rest.
Despite its portly 742-pound (336kg) dry weight, corners can actually be enjoyed. Ground clearance is respectable for a heavyweight, although grinding floorboards is still easy. The new frames lower center of gravity makes parking lot manouevering easier than youd expect. Soft suspension allows some wallowing in quicker corners, but not so much as to put you in a panic. Our only complaint came from the suspensions lack of response to larger bumps, which rock the bike hard. Removing the right saddlebag and adding air to both front and rear suspension is easy and helps somewhat, but rough pavement will still jolt you.
When you get away from torn up urban pavement the Electra Glides soft springs make for a comfortable cruise. Highway miles roll by with no complaints of buffeting, crappy seats or tiring vibration. Just click it into top gear, twist the thumb-operated friction cruise-control and enjoy the view. However, in cooler weather you might want to wear chaps or at least heavy pants as the Electra Glide leaves your knees in the breeze.
On crowded two-lane highways, the lack of passing power is a problem. This engine clearly doesnt enjoy speeds over 85mph, although it will huff and puff its way to 90. Another complaint is saddlebags that look great and remove quickly (just two Dzus fasteners), but arent practical for carrying once off the bike. Optional pull-out liners would be a wise purchase.
Riding a Harley, particularly a Big Twin, is somehow different than other bikes. No, were not falling victim to all the marketing hype that says "Things are different on a Harley." Your life wont change, at least not dramatically. Your dog is still stupid and your cereal will still get soggy. What you will get when you buy a Harley is a truly satisfying bike that holds its value. An Electra Glide Standard has everything that makes Harleys great: Classic styling, a torquey motor and easy maintainence. At $12,495, its almost $2,000 cheaper than a Road King and a whopping $5,255 less than Harleys Ultra Classic. With those extra bucks you could have a lot of fun customizing an Electra Glide to fit your own touring personality. But even if you leave it as is from the factory, this Harley is anything but standard.

Bajaj Auto claims that this bike delivers a fuel efficiency of 87 kilometer per litre, which is quite impressive with these power output figures.

K Srinivas, president (Motorcycle buisiness), Bajaj Auto said, "The steady growth of the more expensive 100 cc bikes at the cost of the cheaper models is a clear evidence of this. The Discover 100T delivers power of 125 cc motorcycle and mileage of a 100 cc."

The company says, the mass market segment wherein 5.5 lakh units are sold every month is getting further dissected into sub-segments namely A1, wherein bikes like Platina and Hero HF are sold between Rs 36,000 to Rs 40,000, A2 segment which includes bikes like Splendor, Passion and its own Discover 100 Rs 41,000 to Rs 45,000 and the A3 segment has motorcycles like Honda Dream Yuga and Hero MotoCorps Passion Pro, which are priced between Rs 46,000 to Rs 51,000 at present.
Thus Bajaj Discover 100 T is positioned in the A3 segment, where Bajaj Auto didnt have any products available till now. Bajaj Auto is hoping to sell around 40,000 to 45,000 units per month of this new Discover 100T. The company says with the existing Discover 100, it has only 20 per cent market share in the mass market category, with the launch of Discover 100T, it is hoping to increase its market share in the segment to 30 per cent within the next couple of years.

Bajaj Auto has developed this model with a minimal expenditure of Rs 5 crore to Rs 6 crore, but it is based on an all new Discover platform, which already has spawned out Bajaj Discover 125 ST. Bajaj Auto invested Rs 25 crore to Rs 30 crore on this new Discover platform. The company is planning to introduce one more motorcycle on the similar platform in 2013. The Discover 100 Tourer will take on the likes of Hero MotoCorp Passion Pro and Honda Dream Yuga, which will help Bajaj Auto increase its presence in the market, where it currently enjoys 20 per cent market share.

Kawasaki KX450F 2012 Review

The Kawasaki KX450F is becoming the jack-of-all-trades in the dirt-bike world. KX450Fs have been on Pro podiums at Motocross, Supercross, WORCS, GNCC, Endurocross and even Flat Track races. The KX450Fs success has always revolved around two major traits: huge power and its ability to perform fairly well at just about everything.
Though it won races, the KX’s large rider ergonomics, excessive weight, abrupt (some would say rude) low-end power delivery and less than sharp cornering manners have traditionally held the KX450F from winning popularity contests. After we rode the 2011 version on everything from frozen lakes to motocross to cross-country to flat track, we pretty much had the bike figured out. When we learned about the changes Kawasaki made to the KX450F for 2012, we couldn’t wait to try it at its press launch at the famous Red Bud track in Buchanan, MI.

Kawasaki is proud of the improvements it made to the 2012 KX450F. We’ll run through a quick recap.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FKX450Fs have won everywhere, from the Supercross tracks to the desert. We expect that streak to continue in 2012.

Kawasaki addressed the too big complaints in a variety of ways. First, theres a new, slimmer frame, but more importantly the handlebars can be adjusted to four different settings thanks to new triple clamps, while footpegs can be raised or lowered to fit your personal preference. If the KX450F still feels a little big, theres an optional suspension linkage that drops seat height 6mm. The end result is the most ergonomically adjustable motocross bike in recent memory.
Kawasaki also worked to improve reliability by including a thicker first gear, a revised crankshaft designed to improve low-end throttle response and engine balance, and thinner piston rings to improve throttle response. They cut small bits of weight all over the bike, going so far as to install a lighter fuel pump. A revised fuel injection system makes EFI tuning easier than ever. A new exhaust system was designed to cut weight, boost performance and still meet AMA sound regulations. Something totally new is the Kawasaki Launch Control System. It is designed to improve traction and rideability off the starting line before it kicks back into ‘normal’ mode when the rider selects third gear.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FPlug and play. Swapping between the three basic fuel injection maps takes only a few seconds.

Red Bud is an amazing motocross facility, with nicely groomed grounds and a world-class motocross track. Obviously you can’t do a ‘real world’ motorcycle test on one perfectly groomed national-level motocross track with factory technicians looking over your shoulders. We tried to find varied riding conditions in addition to the motocross track, but this is more of a ‘first impression’ report than a proper motorcycle test. Our first impression, after having spent so much time on 2011 and 2010 KX450Fs, was how the 2012 model felt much smaller and lighter than its predecessors.
One thing that helped cornering and overall rideability on the 2011 KX450F was to recalibrate the milder fuel injection mapping at the bottom end of the powerband. Fuel-injection tuning on previous KX450Fs was complicated, requiring special programs and adaptors. On the 2012 model swapping between three basic EFI maps takes 10 seconds with no special tools. Kawasaki has three color-coded EFI plugs, soft terrain, intermediate-normal, and hard terrain that simply click into the wiring harness. The hard terrain map is designed for low-traction conditions, so it’s actually the ‘softest’ powerband of the three. At first we were embarrassed to admit we preferred the softer-hit of the ‘hard pack/no traction’ map, but found out later that most of the other magazine editors liked the gentler map better too.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FErgonomic upgrades help make the 2012 KX450F feel noticeably lighter than its predecessors.

Even brand new, with zero-time on the clock, the 2012 KX450F shifted nicely under power and the clutch worked well. We did notice a sizable gap between second and third gear ratios that was a little too big. Adding a tooth or two to the rear sprocket would be an improvement. The light and progressive clutch feel really helps the manners of the KX450F, but how long that clutch will last remains to be seen. Kawasaki has upgraded the 2012 to use slightly stiffer clutch springs to cure the well-publicized premature wear problem they had with older models. In the two days we rode the 2012 the clutch never faded or needed excessive adjustment. First gear is even low enough for off-road use, especially considering there is so much torque on tap.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FLight and precise clutch action make the KX450F surprisingly easy to ride in low-traction situations.

It was a blistering 97F on day-two. When we were going slow and pretending to be Endurocrossers, we cooled off the KX450F by splashing through some water, but we didn’t need to. The radiators gurgled a little in slow running but never boiled out their coolant. That’s another improvement over the 2010 and 2011 models. Sometimes when the engine got really hot it would flame out at low rpm and take several kicks to restart. That’s something we never had a problem with last year and could likely be cured with careful EFI tuning. Aside from the three basic ‘plug and play’ maps the new Kawasaki fuel injection system is infinitely variable through a normal Windows PC.
Despite some major changes to the chassis, vague cornering remains as one of the KX450Fs traits. This is a big, powerful motorcycle that likes to be steered with the throttle. When ridden aggressively it will power around turns quickly, but it won’t rule the inside line. The 2012 KX450F will turn sharply, but you have to work at it and the bike does wander more than we’d like.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FThe KX-F likes slam dancing, not ballet. It likes to turn with a fist full of throttle and the rear wheel spinning.

We tried to improve cornering by adjusting fork height, fork rebound and compression settings, rear suspension sag and high-speed compression and handlebar positioning to find the ideal balance between traction, stability and turning ability. Cornering improved but was never great. That being said, the big Kawasaki is exceptionally stable at speed. The rear brake on the KX450F is excellent but the front remains average. We bled the front brake and tried different lever adjustments but never got rid of the touchy ‘on or off’ feel. Different pads or a different rotor might help. We’d like to try a different front tire as well, which could potentially improve both cornering and braking performance.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FThe suspension soaks up hard landings without a whimper, even when pushed to the stops. Small bump performance is another matter, as the bike hops around too much and transmits too much track hack to the rider.

The 2012 KX450Fs suspension did beat us up over smaller square-edged impacts on the track. It was difficult to get the shock preload backed off enough to get 95-100mm of sag with a 160-pound rider. Heavier riders didn’t complain as much, but it’d be nice if Kawasaki equipped the 450 with the SFF preload-adjustable forks it uses on the 250F. Kawasaki changed the shock linkage this year to improve rear wheel traction. Careful chassis set-up was essential, and when we backed off the compression to absorb chop the bike became more difficult to jump. Bottoming resistance was always excellent, and even when the suspension bottomed out the impact was never overly harsh.
Keeping in mind that we are probably lighter than the average 450 rider, here were our favorite chassis settings at Red Bud:

2012 Kawasaki KX450F2012 Kawasaki Kawasaki Launch Control: Better starts through the magic of electronics.

Kawasaki techs told us to forget worrying about using perfect starting techniques, adding that the Launch Control System rewards Novice riders more than it does Pros. Here’s how it works. Ride up to the starting gate and push the Launch Control button until it flashes. Select second gear, pin it and dump the clutch when the gate drops. The ignition timing is retarded slightly by the Launch Control System until the rider up shifts into third gear, improving traction.
The Kawasaki Launch Control system doesn’t work for third gear starts, which is unfortunate since our testers found it easier and smoother to leave the gate in third. The Kawasaki has ample torque and horsepower for strong third gear starts.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FOn the second day at Red Bud we headed away from the track to get a rough idea of how the KX450F would work in non-motocross conditions.

The KX-F is actually a fun play bike. It begs you to find impossible hills and to turn every lump of dirt into a jump. With a low first gear, smooth clutch and long-feeling wheelbase the KX450F excels at clawing up gnarly hills, but the harsh suspension deflects too much off sharp square edged hits and makes it tough to hold your line. Last year’s bike soaked up trail junk acceptably at race pace, but the 2012 feels harsher. That could be because of the new for 2012 seat foam or the new suspension linkage or the new frame. In any case we aren’t sure why just yet. Fuel range will be less in 2012 than it was in 2011, since the narrower frame and flatter seating position reduced the gas tank capacity from 1.9 to 1.6 gallons. The new exhaust was pleasantly quiet at first but became too loud by the six-hour mark.
So what do we think? We need more time to ride and learn to live with the KX450F before we can give a full answer. The 2012 KX450F is a motorcycle that can win races. We like the 2012 better than the 2011 model because it feels more compact and aggressive. The classic KX450F traits are pretty much the same, but overall performance level and reliability has gone up. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to ride and evaluate a 2012 KX450F in the real world.

Thanks to Kawasaki USA for the invite to the 2012 KX450F press launch, Red Bud for providing the amazing test facility, and Jim Carver for helping provide test input.
2012 Kawasaki KX450FWe’re looking forward to spending more time riding and spinning wrenches on the 2012 KX450F. This bike has huge winning potential in the hands of a competent tuner.
